HOW THE VIRTUAL CHAMPIONSHIP WORKS:
There’s no fuss, no medals, no tees, YOU’RE RACING FOR PRIDE.
(Well, there is a few prizes too for category winners and also random spot prizes from our sponsors Inov8, Pete Bland Sports & Mountain Fuel Sports Nutrition)
Your individual and team results will go down in history, documenting a year of racing that we will never forget.
Races can be entered individually or if you want to compete for a particular championship title in your category you would need to race each race in that series. The top four counters go towards the team results.
Each race is £5 to enter and there is a charitable donation option if desired but not required. All profits from the event will be donated to Mountain Rescue.
Races can be entered individually or if you want to compete for the overall championship title in your category you would need to race each race in that series.
Like a fell champs there is a Short, Medium and a Long.
Race 1 (4m 900ft ascent) race anytime between 27/6/20 & 05/7/20
Individual results (Short)
Race 2 (8m 1800ft ascent) race anytime between 11/7/20 & 26/7/20
Race 3 (12m 3000ft ascent) race anytime between 1/8/20 & 16/8/20
Team results will be based on the top 4 counters from each club across senior and age categories. You can have different team members per race as long as you have four counters in each one.
The competition is straight forward;
- Enter the race
- Plan your route (based on the distance & climb)
- *Race and save your run (using your watch or mobile device)
- Submit your GPX file or recorded app link (for example strava) to info@timingupnorthltd.co.uk .
- View and sort results to see where you’ve finished as an individual and as a club.
- Download finishers certificate
*Timings are based on ‘Elapsed time’ and not moving time.
On completion of each race, you can also download your own personalised race certificate; a unique memento of this historic event. Category and team prize winners will receive a bespoke certificate celebrating their result.

FAQ’s
GPS Elevation and plotting a route
GPS Elevation
We appreciate that devices can record elevation differently so we will accept variations on a route if height gain has not recorded accurately due to your device or running app. We will accept in good faith that the originally planned route accurately covers the required ascent. We suggest you plot your route on a map or using mapping software.
However, please bear in mind we will be randomly checking general results and all category winning results.
We have also described how to plot a route using Strava ( https://virtualrunningchamps.com/how-to-create-a-route-on-strava/ )
GPX Routes
We will be updating two shared folders with .GPX routes that you could use depending on your location.

Why charge £5 for a virtual race?
We appreciate that on the surface a ‘Virtual Race’ may appear as if it has no overheads at all, however there are a number of costs involved. These include the costs of the timing website, the manual uploading and verification of each GPX file, general admin (including communication with potential entrants, actual entrants, correspondence with clubs and sponsors) and then also promotion. Some of these are direct expenses, others just take up a whole load of time.
However, we will be donating any profit from the event to Mountain Rescue, in addition to the discretionary donations that competitors may make. I would envisage this being around £1 to £1.50 per entry, so fingers crossed we can help raise a few quid between us while having a great fun challenge between club members, clubs and individuals 😀
Can you just do reps to get your ascent?
Yes you can do hill reps if you’re doing this as a fun challenge but reps can cause issues with accurate recording so if you want to compete for a category result then we would say you should avoid repetitive reps as we may look at these and judge them not be accurate.
Can I cross a road or go a short distance on tarmac to link my run?
Yes, depending on where you live you may need to do this but we would ask that you keep this to a minimum and if you are looking for a category win it is better if all your route is off road.
Do you need to be part of an affiliated club to enter?
No, if you want to enter as an individual or even as a non affiliated club you can enter.
